Migrant Landbird Study Group

Promoting collaborative research for migratory landbirds across flyways

The Turtle Dove Study Group aims to facilitate broad cooperation between turtle-dove researchers so that we can continue to build the evidence base to develop conservation actions for the species.

The European Turtle-dove (Streptopelia turtur) is declining at an alarming rate in many countries across Europe and central Asia. Some of the sharpest declines are known to occur along the Western European flyway, from the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany down through France, Spain and Portugal. Information about the species on its staging grounds in North Africa and its wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa is very limited and more knowledge is urgently needed. The species is Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

To address the population declines, an EU-funded project to develop a set of conservation actions to benefit turtle-doves across Europe was launched in 2015 – the Single Species Action Plan for European Turtle-dove, one of nine Species Action Plans being developed under the LIFE EuroSAP project. Two workshops were held in December 2016 and January 2017 to define conservation actions for the turtle-dove. During the discussions it was felt that a platform for turtle-dove researchers to share their knowledge and experiences would be a valuable tool for the conservation of the species. The Turtle-dove Study Group has been established to support that requirement.

The Turtle-dove Study Group currently consists of a web-based forum, hosted on the Migrant Landbird Study Group website. Here, Study Group members can start, and contribute to, discussions on aspects of turtle-dove research, information about new publications and generally share their expertise. There is also the option to upload documents to the forum and to list publications on the Publications page of the MLSG website.

There are two ways to join the Turtle-dove Study Group:

  1. Sign up as a member of the Turtle-dove Study Group only. This will give you access to the Turtle-dove Study Group forum only. Signing up as a Turtle-dove Study Group member is free.
  2. Become a member of the Migrant Landbird Study Group. This will give you full access to the membership features of the MLSG website (see table of membership benefits below). Membership costs start at just €15.00 per year, see the Registration page of the MLSG website for full pricing.
